AI250 BXR is AI Synthesis' first foray into digital synthesis, and is inspired by vintage nuclear test equipment—specifically boxcar averagers, a type of gated integrator whose original purpose was to improve signal-to-noise ratio in pulsed experiments. Here the mathematics behind these vintage test instruments is repurposed for a signal blender, sound generator, and waveshaper with plenty of character. At the core, the module is built around interaction between two input signals, whether audio or CV. One of them can be sourced from a built-in variable-shape VCO with v/oct tracking, dedicated Pitch and Shape controls, and an LFO/audio rate range switch.

Argument defines the input for further processing—whether individual A or B, or various combinations of the two (A+B, A-B, etc.). The result then runs through one of the available functions. Next, it enters the distortion stage, which shapes the character further and can be used independently on the input with Argument and Function set fully counterclockwise. A Dry/Wet control lets you set the right blend between direct input and processed signal. Besides the main output there's a VCO output and two derivative Geiger gates. Simultaneously straightforward and strange, the module packs a ton of grit and character across a variety of use cases.
