Alexander Pedals Velvet Noise

Velvet Noise from Alexander Pedals is a stereo widener built on a unique design principle. The standard approaches—mid/side processing, micro-delays between the sides, phase shifts, FFT-based convolution—all work by tricking the ear, and they can come up short: they don't always survive the headphone test, they can collapse in mono, and they may cause problems at the mastering stage. Alexander instead dove into acoustics research and came back with velvet-noise decorrelation, a technique that widens a signal in a way much closer to how real acoustic spaces scatter sound.

The method convolves each channel with sparse, pseudo-random sequences of impulses—velvet noise—making each side genuinely different from the other and sidestepping the comb filtering that conventional widening produces, with minimal coloration of the source. Because the impulses are sparse, the processing stays light and avoids the latency that conventional convolution introduces. The image goes wider than conventional methods manage, and it holds up in mono.

A single Width control delivers a no-frills interface, where you can decide at will how much space a source should take: from a laser beam to an endless field. Full counterclockwise leaves the dry signal untouched; turning clockwise blends in progressively more of the processed signal. At maximum, subtle modulation kicks in for the most extreme separation. If you're looking to go wide and conquer with lush, enveloping sound, feel the magic of Velvet Noise from Alexander Pedals.
