Canvas Expression Expression Pedal
Walrus Audio Canvas Expression
With Canvas Expression, Walrus Audio set out to design an expression pedal that solves nearly all the problems conventional passive designs tend to suffer from: inconsistent output, compatibility trouble with certain gear, and limited connectivity. Being powered rather than passive keeps the control signal stable, and the contactless mechanism means there's nothing inside to wear out, go scratchy over time, or fail mid-performance. A good deal of the pedal's behavior is adjustable too, down to the treadle resistance, so you can set the feel exactly how you want it.
Canvas Expression carries two configurable 1/4" output jacks, each of which can be set for standard expression with adjustable sweep direction, a programmable switch, or CV. Jack wiring can be set to TRS, RTS, or TS resistance mode, with adjustable tapers and automatic detection to take the guesswork out of setup. CV runs at a selectable 0–5V or 0–3.3V, which suits Eurorack, desktop synths, and CV-enabled effects. The switch side has its own set of options: momentary or latching operation, forward or reverse triggering, and an activation point at heel, middle, or toe. On top of that there's 1/8" TRS Type A MIDI I/O alongside MIDI over USB-C, carrying up to sixteen assignable CC or Program Change messages at 14-bit resolution over the USB side. For ease of configuration, Walrus supplies the pedal with a dedicated web editor.
Between all these options, Walrus Audio's Canvas Expression is covering ground that would otherwise take two or three separate boxes, making it possible to have a single pedal control several devices—hardware and software—all at once.
